Timeline was invited by UN Women to speak at one of the sessions at the Asia-Pacific 2023 WEPs (Women’s Empowerment Principles) Forum: Accelerating Business Action for an Equal Future.
Held in Manila, Philippines on November 7-8, 2023, the forum brought together CEOs and business owners and practitioner-level business representatives, as well as representatives from Securities and Exchange Commissions, Stock Exchanges, industry associations and business clubs/circles, government agencies and development partners. This was the first ever in-person convening of the WEPs community in the region, aiming to create a platform for learning and networking, and to further catalyze commitments and deeper business action towards gender equality, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Agendas, and ultimately to more inclusive economic growth in in Asia and the Pacific.
Since its launch in 2010, WEPs has been a vital tool to encourage private sector commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. At the Asia-Pacific Forum, different breakout sessions focused on each of the seven principles of WEPs. As one of the speakers in “Session F: Safe Workplaces” on Day 1, Timeline Consultancy shared its experiences and insights on projects carried out in some supply chain factories in China and Southeast Asia, including various approaches targeting corporate top management, functional departments, executive level HR/ESG departments, and grassroots workers, and also introduced a series of guidebooks themed “Creating a Safe, Equal and Healthy Workplace” developed by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU). Timeline’s sharing attracted active attention from all participants in the breakout session and was highly praised by the senior program officer of the Philippines Office of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and enterprises from different countries. They described Timeline’s presentation as “down-to-earth”, “practical”, “inspiring”, “able to attract the interest of employees”, and “very helpful to enterprises”.
Timeline felt honored to share the good practices of the Chinese supply chain in an international conference, and we were encouraged by the thought-provoking nature of the short presentations. During the two-day conference, Timeline gained a lot from the sharing of UN Women, enterprise representatives, and organizations from different countries. We feel a greater sense of responsibility for the future to continue promoting gender equality in the workplace and to promote business success.
As UN Women emphasized during the conference, “No country in the world has truly achieved gender equality”. The future still holds great promise, and gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace are linked to day-to-day business management. We welcome you to share your views and discuss related topics with us.
